A Community Celebration

Main Street Day is a day created by the Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Association to bring the community together on Main Street. The purpose is to help highlight local Main Street businesses, and raise awareness of the issues to be overcome in rehabilitating Main Street. These efforts by the Castleton-On-Hudson Main Street Association (COHMSA) help lead a discussion of what was once available here in Castleton and what could be the future of Main Street, all for the objective to strengthen our community.

Let’s Talk Main Street

The first Main Street Day was held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 hosted by the Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Association (COHMSA). Whether talking about yesteryear, or envisioning tomorrow, the conversations were centered around this most vital artery of our community located along to the river.

Over a hundred people strolled the avenue viewing pictures of Main Street as it once stood. Majestic facades within this tree-lined business district were highlighted by posters displayed up and down Main Street. Colorful footsteps placed on the sidewalks and a scavenger hunt guided visitors to the various venues and attractions that helped celebrate the day, including tours of new homes and businesses.

Blazing burgers and sizzling hotdogs were fired on the grill. Yard games, face painting and a watercolor paint activity delighted the children. “Meet Me On Main” tee-shirts were sold to raise funds for improvement activities. For those who wanted to relive the old days, there was a continuous slideshow of photographs on the history of the Village from its humble beginnings to the heyday of the past. Bands played on throughout the day all generously donating their musical talent to the celebration of all things Main Street.

On the quieter end of the bustling street was a discussion area where conversation and listening were the topics of the day. Nowhere on Main were voices silent as people shared personal pictures and stories of this uncle or that aunt who once owned or operated any of the many local businesses. But here, Village Trustees and the Mayor, various members of the Main Street Association responsible for the event and others talked not so much of the past, but of the possibilities for the future.

The stated goal of Main Street Day was to raise awareness and funds by highlighting what was once available and what could be in the future for the Village of Castleton-on-Hudson. While the day has ended, the COHMSA’s mission has just started. Please help continue the excitement begun on Main Street Day, for the future of our Main Street – and our entire Village – is not accomplished by a single day but by a commitment to a mission shared by all.
